The Origin Story

The idea of founding Ebenezer Healthcare Access emerged in June 2009, following Jean's eligibility for Medicaid. At that time, he was unable to use it due to language and cultural barriers. As he developed communication skills and proficiency in American English, he decided to return to school, choosing Wright State University. During the application process, the admissions office requested that he submit a letter of intent outlining his interest in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program. In this letter, Mr. Mukunzi stated that the MPH would equip him with the skills and competencies needed to help immigrants navigate the U.S. healthcare system.

Academic & Research Excellence

Jean's passion for helping immigrants and other underserved populations grew throughout his graduate studies. As a requirement for earning a Master of Public Health (MPH), he conducted research to assess refugees' health needs in Montgomery County. This study became one of the first to focus on immigrants living in the Greater Dayton area.

Since then, academic researchers and community practitioners have cited this work to develop practical healthcare recommendations that support immigrant populations.

Professional Impact

More than seven years after graduation, Mr. Mukunzi has served populations across several counties in Ohio while working for CareSource, helping immigrants and other community members navigate the U.S. healthcare system. In 2018, he collaborated with Dayton and Montgomery County Public Health to implement the Fatherhood Program, an initiative aimed at reducing infant mortality rates.

Mr. Mukunzi is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with over fifteen years of experience in healthcare. He has extensive expertise in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and closing healthcare projects. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated success in project planning and implementation. Notably, he contributed to the success of the HIV/PEPFAR program in Rwanda, which gained recognition from U.S. leadership in 2008 due to its positive impact in Rwanda and neighboring countries.

Mr. Mukunzi worked at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as a Population Health Project Manager, where he gained extensive knowledge and developed the vision to establish his own organization, Ebenezer Healthcare Access (EHA), to help New Americans navigate the U.S. healthcare system.
