Dr.Joseph Niyibizi is an epidemiologist and specialist in infectious diseases. After his medical studies, he worked at several positions of responsibility in the field of public health in Rwanda. He was among the pioneer doctors who initiated the medical treatment of HIV/AIDS in Rwanda in the early 2000s. As national coordinator of pediatric HIV/AIDS care, he led the design and the implementation of the national care program for child victims of HIV/AIDS in Rwanda.
He holds a PhD in epidemiology (University of Montreal), a master's degree in infectious disease control (Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium), a master's degree in public health (University of Montreal) and a doctorate in general medicine (National University of Rwanda). In addition to his university training, he has completed various refresher courses in quantitative methods and infectious disease control.
He participated in several public health researches. His research interest included the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections as well as infectious diseases in pregnant women and newborns. Most recently, Joseph collaborated in the multicenter study in Montreal on mother-to-child transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the potential adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Currently, as a research analyst at "Institut de la statistique du Québec", he's conducting various research projects, particularly on sexual violence among teenagers and the cancer survivorship.
